Welcome to Porterville Strings!

History of the program

Now in its 15th year, Porterville Strings began as a a collaborative effort between the local branch of the American Association of University Women, founding faculty from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, the Porterville College Music Department, the Porterville Unified School District, and local musicians and supporters who have generously given their time, talents, and resources to provide a low-cost, challenging, and rewarding opportunity for local music students to improve their skills. The program has since incorporated to its own 501c3.  The idea for the program began in summer of 2008 in Porterville, California, where a former townie brought home a vision for its music students. Porterville has long since been a city that has valued and fought for its performing arts education, carrying the belief that any child deserves the benefit and luxury of music in their lives. Through the collaboration of the current founding faculty, along with Friends of Strings, American Association of University Women, Porterville College  and many residents of the community at large, the Porterville Intensive String Work shop was born. Its name has since been changed to Porterville Strings, but the program has seen incredible growth and success within the last 13 years.

The program offers a wide range of learning opportunities such as: Piano lessons, music theory, technique class, orchestra, sectionals, chamber ensemble, and private lessons culminating in a final concert at the end of the week. We are passionate about music and its formative value in the lives of young and old, and are equally excited for you to partner with us in continuing the legacy that we are creating for the Porterville community!

Mission Statement

“Porterville Strings provides a diverse, well-rounded program that cultivates the ability for students to lead successful lives through a sincere passion for music.

  • We believe that cost should not restrict a child’s access to high quality music education. Therefore, the program aims to provide a low-cost program with full scholarships available.
  • We believe that a variety of caring role-models is essential in creating a wholesome learning environment. Therefore, Porterville Strings provides a diverse faculty that includes both experienced teachers and emerging college-age musicians.
  • We believe that every student has the potential to achieve high standards in music and in life. Therefore, the approach that Porterville Strings takes in teaching music promotes an environment of excellence, which nurtures discipline and self-assurance.”
